this was very interesting and informative. the author was one of the first foreign students in the early 70's. she is from canada, a canadian chinese and was there with an american chinese student. she did not speak chinese when she arrived. she was a fan of Mao and communism. it is interesting to see how naive she was and how her thinking changed over the years. she ended up a journalist and spent many more years there. she had a front row seat for the massacre at tiananmen square. she covers the evolution of china from the mao time to the mid 90's.
