Djibouti

by Elmore Leonard
One of the things most critics seem to love about Elmore Leonard books is the authentic dialog. To me, it just makes the books that much harder to read. That said, this one was interesting, although I found the structure someone jarring, as it bounces back and forth between the present (in which the main characters -- documentary film makers -- are discussing and reviewing a film they made about Somali pirates) and the past, during which they are in Somalia and nearby Djibouti with the pirates and others. It seems like there could have been much more suspense built if the reader didn't know from the beginning that the main characters both survive their encounters to talk about them. But the premise is unique and it offers an interesting look at the modern pirates infesting that part of the world.
