This book probably deserves a 3.5, but I think it deserves a 4 more than a 3. Overall, I enjoyed this book. I think that it is an excellent introduction to the topic of the Holocaust, and thus would be great to teach in upper elementary or early junior high school. It provides a lot of great opportunities to not only really help young people understand what happened during the Holocaust, but also to help students be introduced to the Jewish culture in general.

Hannah is a fairly likable character, though not entirely lovable. I think it was wise of Yolen to have a modern girl be transported back to the time of the Holocaust. It really put a lot of things into perspective. I was also pleased with the ending.
