The problem with this book is that it's not real.
Juliet Marillier is my arch-nemesis and main rival. We've been competing against each other for the coveted title of #1 most followed Australian for awhile now. The battle has been vicious. The competition fierce.

Okay, maybe she's not as "aware" of this competition as I am... so what if it appears that she's almost never even ON Goodreads and by all accounts may actually have forgotten that she has a GoodReads? It still counts as a competition, right?
But since I've beaten her three weeks in a row, I feel confident that I can once again read her books.
This was a mistake. My jealousy only makes me hate her more. Because this book was fantastic, fantabulous, fantasmagorical.
Recipe for a Juliet Marillier book:
3 parts brilliant written prose
2 parts whimsical fancy
1 awesome female protagonist
1 can of whoop-arse

Available from all major grocery chains and retail outlets
I doubt anybody does magical faery realms and myth retellings with the style, flair and gothic majesty of Juliet Marillier.
I strongly recommend this book to anybody with an inner child and a desire to have their mind blown.

You know how you sometimes read that one magical book that just blows you away, and then you're scared to read anything else by the author in case it diminishes the magic? I've been sitting on about ten of Marillier's books for a while now, but I'm scared to break the spell of Daughter of the Forest. Tell me this one is better! o_O
Vinaya, I enjoyed this book much more than Daughter of the Forest, personally! You should also read Heart's Blood. I loved that one too!
Nope. Though the chances of finding one were always small since:
A) I'm married and thus boring.
B) I'm not a virgin.
C) I don't live in soul crushing poverty.
D) Nor is my family abusive and
E) I'm not repressing a wild and passionate nature.
All of this makes fairies very uninterested in me.
That "oblivious" picture makes it impossible not to like the review. You should have it at hand for when you review one of those 1 star books. It would keep the trolls at bay.Have you considered sending Marillier creepy PMs taunting her about who won the week? That should give her something to think about. (view spoiler)
I LOVE this book too. And you are my favorite Aussie reviewer on all of goodreads. Your Kushiel's Dart review was WAY better than Marillier's (and um not because I agree with you and not her, or anything).
Mariel, it's comments like that, that make you one of my favourite people! Elizabeth, *shrugs* eh... maybe! So where are the fairies already?
Kat sorry to be the one breaking this to you but there were sightings of recent activity in Juliet Marillier's GR page. You might wanna start a new strategy, LOL.I've had this book in my TR list for a while now, and you now convinced me finally read it. I only read DOTF and loved it, and plan on reading Heart's Blood as well :) She does write beautifully.
That cover sure is gorgeous. If it makes you feel better, Kat, I love your reviews and my boss walked in yesterday while I was watching one of your video reviews instead of working, but I have never even heard of Marillier up till now.
Oh noes Gloria! I surely hope you didn't get in trouble! Give her a try. Really. She is a brilliant author.
Nah, my screen minimising skills are pretty good + it's generally relaxed where I work, so long as I do what I'm supposed to do no one really cares, but somehow you still feel like a kid cought with a hand in the sweety jar, you know.
Thanks to this review, I read this book. I will admit, this one blew me out of the water. I tried to read it slowly because I was savoring the story. I actually teared up at the end, because I didn't want it to be over.
Although I loved the book... It was very predictable to me. The wetting was amazing and I would love to live in her dancing glade forever!! Being an illustrator though I would like to say the cover is a little out-dated. I'm not saying I didn't like it cause I loved looking for each part of the story on the cover... But for others who judge books by their cover ( you k ow who u are, & I'm guilty of it too) I think it would draw in more readers with a more modern look. Just an opinion.
Loved irge book tho and reccomend it to all who love to disappear into a fairy tale and be drawn so much into a book that you wish it was real!

Enjoy!
