This is the book that made me a Paul Auster fan, though of course this remains Auster's best. I'm glad I discovered it through a freshman English class. The New York Trilogy is quintessential Auster with all of the key features that characterize his novels: the protagonist is an author; coincidences feature as key elements in the plot; and, of course, New York as the setting and the center of the world. Those who like slightly off-beat, even experimentalist fiction would find Auster very interesting. He writes in very light and easy prose, but explores deep issues that underscore literature -- and life. The New York Trilogy, in partcular, evokes questions about identity, language, authorship, existence, and even the philosophy/architecture of (urban) space -- but these are examined in ways you probably wouldn't expect or are used to. Read it, you won't be disappointed!
