From Focal Press comes “Way Beyond Monochrome: Advanced Techniques for Traditional Black and White Photography” (second edition) by Ralph Lambrecht and Chris Woodhouse. Despite the now well developed digital (r)evolution, the authors wholeheartedly still believe in the power, range and versatility of analog (film) photography and traditional silver-gelatin printmaking, particularly in its use in art and documentary photography. The authors have created a heavy-weight book that explores and informs in extensive detail the techniques and benefits of monochrome photography and how to expand both the limits and the quality of final prints in ways that are informed by everything from image quality to hybrid printing to working with digital negatives and everything else that plays a role in the final result. This 542 page volume is ideally suited to those looking for careers in either art or portrait photography and provides an impressive array of extensive information on every aspect of the field.
