I've truly never read anything like this. The way Mitchell intermingles these six different stories, all in vastly different locations and time periods, is remarkable. Themes of life vs. death, slavery, power, philosophy, creativity and unlikely friendship are carried through each with ease but displayed in such different ways. His writing is spectacular, allowing the reader to be transported into the lives of the characters in their unique time and place. After reading this, I feel that the bar has been raised. This is one book that will stay with me for a long, long time.
