Cowgirls Don't Cry (Rough Riders, #10)

Okay, I'm rounding this one up to 4 stars from about 3.6.
Right off the top the book loses an entire star for the prologue. Now infamous, it was really a terrible way to start this story. The writing didn't rise to the more recent LJ standard and the situation was OOC for both leads. The location was out of the blue and wasn't used again so it was distracting. I have this feeling that it might have been a set up for a later book since there was some vague reference to Brandt's brothers or cousins being there, but we never saw them or what they were doing.
Skip the prologue altogether is my advice. It isn't necessary for the story and it starts the whole thing off with a very bad vibe.
The story itself is okay. It has some lulls and Jessie got on my nerves a few times, but overall it was a good installment. The last 25% of the story saves the whole thing, IMO, and reminds me of why I enjoy this author so much. She so often gives the reader the unexpected, yet totally believable plot progression and I love that. Her "slice of life" storytelling is very good and the character chemistry is usually completely believable.
This was not as good as my favorites -- "Branded as Trouble" and "Raising Kane" -- but it's a decent installment anyway and I'm chomping at the bit for the next one (pun intended).

Great review Beanbag! As you know, I am on the same page. I am disappointed that this book left me with a bad taste since I loved so many of the others

I also wonder what the future holds for Casper and Joan. I feel like maybe that's not quite finished. What a horrible man, but she screwed him over big time. Again, unexpected -- an LJ trait.

SPOILER END
True but I don't think they should get back together. You cannot overcome 30 years of resentment and verbal abuse.Casper was a verbally abusive jerk to his wife and kids and doesn't deserve to be around them unless he majorly changes his actions.
I agree, but remember how Carson was in the first RR book. He didn't give Colby Channing's messages and tried to force a match between him and AJ. Casper's a huge jerk, but I think there might be some development with him -- after all he's going to be totally alone for the first time in his life. As for Joan, she allowed him to abuse his sons that way because of her own guilt which I don't have much sympathy for. She has a lot to answer for as well, she's just been nicer over the years even as she enabled the abuse. They're lucky their sons didn't turn out to be serial killers. O_O
(I don't think they should get back together either, but I wouldn't mind seeing some kind of development with Casper. I can't imagine that wouldn't be incredibly angst-filled. Or will he just continue be an awful jerk for the rest of his sons' books? Seems almost pointless to keep him around then.)
There is always hope Casper will see the light and become a better person but he still hurt his kids way too much.
Great review Beanbag. I agree, the prologue totally ruins the book. But I totally erased it from my mind and went on with the story that unfolded. True, this one isn't as good as the other 2 I have read from LJ, but I still loved this one well enough!Interesting thought on Casper. I would also like to see something more unfold out of him. Guess we'll have to wait and see then. ^_^
