The third in the 'Warrior of Rome' series featuring the barbarian/Roman general Ballista. Here he escapes the clutches of Shapur, King of Kings, but not the shadow of the oath he has sworn on his family's lives.
This seemed to me to be the darkest of the books so far, and some of the violence is truly shocking - but it's a rich portrayal of the treachery and terror that must have underlain the struggle for power as the Roman empire tore itself apart. Powerful stuff.
