This is a magnificently written book that I just finished reading for the second time. It's like a roman a clef and a bromance all rolled into one. The lives of the characters are so beautifully and vividly portrayed that you'll feel like you lived through all three decades of the book with them.

Elizabeth McCracken is one of this country's most overlooked and underrated authors. She's the author of "The Giant's House," which everyone should be forced to read under penalty of law, and this book is a close second. I hope she continues with this type of first-person narrative, because she has such a talent for voice, wit and just really smart stories.
