Very well written novel about a post-apocalyptic world run over by vampire-like creatures. It pays homage to Dracula in its writing style as well as in the nature of the creatures. It sets up very nicely what should be a series of books.

The story is a mammoth piece of narrative jumping back and forth by decades. It begins with an army funded expedition to find a virus that gives super human strength along with a serious thirst for blood. Once the virus is secure it is taken to an ultra secret military base to be tested on human subjects who are death row inmates who trade in for life imprisonement for becoming guinea pigs. Jump forward some decades and the story shifts to a post-apocalyptic future in which the world has been decimated by virals (that's what the afflicted are called). In one of the few surviving human settlements a hero quest begins when unable to keep its energy supply the survivors are forced to go into viral territory to repair their energy source.
