Virgilio's review of The First Man in Rome
The First Man in Rome by Colleen McCullough
So far the best historical fiction about the Roman Republic, extremely faithful to the facts and historical accuracy. The only thing I missed was a more real and detailed description of the Legions, how they lived, how they fought, considering that Rome was a very military Empire, and the tremendous importance to the whole Roman Empire and the Republic of the performance, weapons, tactics of the Legions and the Roman Army. But altogether a pleasure to read. This book is followed by others that go until the murder of Caesar and the Empire of Augustus.
