Not a lot needs to be said on this one. If you haven't read Sandman Slim, then read that one first, before you tackle this one. If you liked it, then you'll like this one, perhaps even more. As always with the second in a series, the author's got some more freedom in one sense, because you already know the characters and have some background, so that doesn't need to be covered again. On the other hand, there's perhaps a bit less freedom for some of the same reason, but Kadrey manages to take Slim a bit farther. He's emotionally a bit more developed but also rudderless, since in the first book his reason for being was, to some extent, taken care of. There's no real big baddie here, though there's a mystery that, while not as developed as it might have been, keeps things moving along as Slim encounters one odd character after another. The journey's the fun part, and the weirdos populating L.A.'s occult underworld are just as entertaining as they should be. All this plus zombies, what's not to like?
