A book that every American citizen should read and then cover their head in shame that our "enlightened" nation has ever been a part of such a debasing horrific practice as slavery! Shame on America for not founding a nation of humanity, along with the "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." It is an embarrassment that humans would subject others to such treatment. I was mortified by the beliefs of some important historical figures. Although this book received a Newbery Honor award, I would not let children read such accounts of torture. A mature middle school or High School student would have the ability to process such information.

Deborah You may not be in the mood for more of the harsh realities of slavery, but I'm listening to Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass. I feel naive. It is really hitting more than ever what slavery really means.
