Reading this reminded me that Ireland's current economic woes are pretty small in the grand scheme of things. The Mobutu years in (then) Zaire were an astonishing catalogue of bare-faced kleptocracy by the leader and his mates and craven ineptness by global institutions (including the IMF). This book tells the story in an engaging style with some excellently observed details. Not a comprehensive history by any means, but it doesn't pretend to be.
