Justin's review of Last Evenings on Earth
Last Evenings on Earth (New Directions Paperbook) by Roberto BolaƱo
A collection of shorts which makes a great primer for Bolano if you haven't read his other work. His work comes across almost as a documentation of day-to-day aspects of being a middle class wandering Latin American during the diaspora of the 60s and 70s when nothing was stable except for instability itself (almost like a modern wandering jew, sans being jewish). I read this while traveling around Argentina and it made me think about how so much has changed since the 70s. So sad he passed away in 2003 and didn't have a chance to write more. Quite possibly my favorite Latin American writer!
