Matt's review of House of Leaves
House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski
Here is a book about a maze, you have to learn how to navigate it.
When I first started reading House of Leaves, I read a review that accused it of being smug and pretentious. Maybe it is (I did agree with the review at that time).
But then things changed in my life. The book was in no way the catalyst, bad things just happen. Afterwards I became more emotionally invested in the story, and I felt like I understood it.
It's hard to explain, but for me House of Leaves became a journey. Something to feel my way through and conquer. And I think if you're going to focus more on oddly constructed pages than the emotion, it's not worth making it through.
