I've read a lot of terrible books, but this one possibly wins the distinction of being the worst book that I have ever read. It was awful.

An explanation....I liked Wicked and I have read all of Maguire's other books. Every time a new Maguire book came out, I read it and they seemed to progressively go downhill. I didn't expect Son of s Witch to be very good, but I wanted to give it a chance.

The only reason that this book was possibly written, is due to the success of the stage musical of Wicked. It is the only possible reason. This book served no real purpose and did not move the story forward in a meaningful way. Off the subject, I didn't care for the musical version of Wicked. It was a less than ideal adaptation and lackluster as far as musicals go. I don't understand why it has been so popular.

Something that really irritated me about this book was the over abundance of fantasy terms. Yes, I know that it's a fantasy book, but I couldn't help but feel that Maguire thought that he was being super clever with word play and naming things. It came across as pretentious and annoying. The writing was just bad. The characters were ridiculous and most of plot didn't have a point. A terrible, terrible book.

One more thing...the Thomas Jefferson quote at the end of the book really added to the pretentious factor. Blah!!!!

Jeff Hawkins ugh

I thought you were staying away from Maguire

Karen Hansen I know...it's a terrible book too. I will explain myself in my review. :-)

Kevin Smith "It came across as pretentious and annoying. The writing was just bad. The characters were ridiculous and most of plot didn't have a point."

Pretty much sums the book up.

Ashley Smith How is quoting Thomas Jefferson pretentious? Maybe if he was quoting Heidegger. Seriously, though, by what you read, I can tell that you wouldn't have appreciated this book anyway.

Karen Hansen Fair enough..I honestly read it so long ago, that I can't at the moment defend my review. There is no way that I would waste my time and give it a second go. I know that many people enjoy his books, but I've written Maguire off as an author that I will no longer read.
