I had started this book a year or so ago, but it just didn't suit my mood. I had nothing else to read the other night and so I picked it back up, dubiously. But I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised. The idea of it is difficult to render in a few sentences--but here's my attempt: the story of a few women and 1 man who have a book club in which they read Jane Austen books and, through the reading of them all and the passage of some time, their lives change from somewhat problematic to happy ending, just as if Austen herself were taking a hand in it. I'm not a big Austen fan--a less than a fan, in fact--but I appreciated the rather cutesy idea. I like happy endings. The book is very postmodernistic in that it makes use of multimedia/genre and has a scattered timeframe. The writing style itself is very comfortable and enjoyable. I enjoyed the author's sense of structure and humor. The 3 stars is because, like Simon, I find it all" a bit forgettable." Fun, but lacks that oomph that would make me say that I loved it.

Janine I didn't like the movie AT ALL; I thought the connection to Jane Austen books was ridiculous and contrived. I don't know if the book is any better, but the movie was bleh so I don't think I care.

Amy I really enjoyed your review, and I loved your Simon quote - perfect context. I think something being enjoyable but forgettable is the perfect reason for a 3-star rating.
