I received this book in a Goodreads giveaway from St. Martin's Press.
This is a murder/missing persons mystery and so much more. Taking place in Berlin in 1932/1933, just as Hitler's Third Reich comes to power, the Jewish protagonist investigator finds Nazi baddies at every turn. While the investigation is taking place, Jews are fleeing Berlin, and our hero is advised to do so, as well.
I really enjoyed the descriptions of Berlin between WWI and WWII. The streets, the architecture, the costumes, the growing feeling of fear in the city come alive on the pages. It reads, to me, like film noir. I would love to follow this cast of characters through more mysteries, but alas, Hitler has prevented that.
I look forward to Mr. Grossman's next novel.
