Quite the little book. The book centers on two boys who are banished to the rural life during the 1970s cultural revolution in China. The narrator and his friend Luo, work hauling mulch up mountains and in a coal mine. They are semi-educated a n yearn for something more. They meet the enchanting Little Seamstress and the story forges on when they discover western classics such as Balzec, Flaubert and Melville being hidden at a semi-friend's house.

I enjoyed the storytelling elements of the story. It felt like a great series of folktales from the boys getting lice while trying to find out the traditional folk songs of the area to discovering love for the first time. Great book discussion book!
