Susan's story of her life as a member of the Church of the Firstborn - a fundamentalist Mormon group run by the LeBaron family. One brother, Ervil ends up splitting off and ordering the murders of many people. She willingly became the sixth wife of Verlan LeBaron and then discovers what it's really like to be a plural wife - the friendship & jealousy between wives, the poverty, not seeing her husband, kids not knowing their father, the husband constantly courting and marrying new wives. She finally decides she hates the life and doesn't believe in it anymore and leaves her husband when she's 25 and has 6 kids. I would hate to have to share my husband!
