it was amazing

though made for a younger audience of the preteens/8-12 range, Riordan is still an amazing story-teller. it can be compared to Harry Potter, but only because the protagonist is a teenaged boy who suddenly gains super-human powers, has 2 friends, and goes to a special training facility.
these books are fast-paced, action-packed, and still really funny and touching. seen through the eyes of a 12-year-old boy, the story follows Percy and his friends though all the batshit insanity that is Greek mythology. the absolute best part of this series is that Riordan never tries to sugarcoat or Christianize/Westernize the Greek gods. they are the exact gods of the myths: petty, mean, shallow, benevolent, wise, and fickle. (which is why the movie was awful!)
anyway, in conclusion: if you love Greek mythology, read this. if you don't know anything about Greek mythology, but are open to the idea, read this.
