This book is loaded with upsetting topics. Numerous parts of the book were strange and I found almost every character peculiar, making you feel like they were almost cartoon characters with bigger than life personalities. Also, the opening of the book was very disturbing. Because of all of the above, the first half of the book was a slow and an un-motivating read for me. But then at about halfway+ through the book, I started to put some of the exaggeration and disturbing parts aside and was totally focused on the main character, Stevie. I found myself wanting to fight for her and wanted her to make a better life for herself. I wished I could have comforted her during the saddest of times mentioned. I began to sympathize with Stevie and wanted everything in her life to get better. She deserved a life without pain and heartache. I wanted to keep reading hoping that she would find love, self-worth and forgiveness. I was so pleased with the end of this story and am so happy that I stuck to the book and kept on reading. If you can get past the crazy characters in this book and their unusual behaviors then you will LOVE it and you will not want to miss out on this incredible story. If you can put aside Lance’s blow up dolls, Zena’s roller derby way of life, Crystal’s offensive behavior, Herbert’s horrible and unnecessary treatment toward his children and the details of Helen’s troubling disease then you will adore this story and will want to know everything about the author, Cathy Lamb. You will probably die to know what goes through her mind when she creates a story. I can’t wait to talk about the book at B-Club. Girls, I finished just in the nick of time.
