A good read overall, but I think the effect of the politics would have had a much larger impact in the day it was written. The idea is that America becomes a fascist dictatorship, keep in mind this was written in the 1930's when other countries underwent this change. If you've read Naomi Wolf's The End of America, then you know that we're closer to fascism than most realize (there are ten things that happen under all fascist takeovers, we're up to number nine). What makes me think that it has less impact today is that the person who takes over runs for President on an openly racist platform, and I'd like to imagine that it wouldn't really work in this day and age. If a candidate rolled out a 15 point platform, and in that they stated that anyone who was black, jewish, or a woman had no rights. That would fail miserably today, right?
