I had heard so many glowing reviews of this book and this author I was sure I was going to like this book. The setting was interesting, too. It was modern day, though as if part of Alaska had been set aside as post WWII refugee for the Jews. But it was essential a gritty old detective novel, with the 'hero' a washed up alcoholic divorced man living in a dumpy hotel. I plowed through it, expected it to pick up a little, but it never did. I think if you were a big fan of murder mysteries and don't have a need to like the protagonist, then maybe. Otherwise, no. I might try another of Michael Chabon's books, apparently they're all different. But I'm not in any rush.
