An old man receives a visit from somebody (probably another man, but you are never sure), who wants to know whether the old man sells beans. That brings about a long (almost 400p) monologue about the old man's life. Each chapter uses some kind of encounter or someone special to the old man to give the reader part of the old man's pie.

During his narrative the reader gets to know how the old man witnessed his whole village being massacred during WWII, how he survived this attack, what happened to him after the war, how he became a world famous saxophone player and how he ended as a caretaker of vacation homes on the very spot where his childhood village used to be.

Beautifully written, this is surely a five-star read!
