The Reversal, by Michael Connelly, A-plus. Narrated by Peter Giles, produced by Hachette Audio, downloaded from audible.com.

This is one of the best Connelly books I can remember. Here we have Mickey Haller and Harry Bosch working together. We even have a cameo consult from Rachel Wallin. Mickey Haller, a well-known defense attorney, is contacted by the L.A. Prosecutor’s office and offered a job as an independent prosecutor to re-try Jason Jessup. Jessup was convicted 24 years ago for brutally killing a child and leaving her in a dumpster. He served 24 years. Then DNA found on the child’s dress back in the ‘80’s could finally be tested, and it was found not to be his. The court reversed his conviction. The prosecutor’s office was certain he was guilty but couldn’t try the case with anyone connected with their own office, even those who hadn’t been there when he was convicted. So Mickey agreed this one time to take the prosecutor’s job if he could be fully independent and if he could choose his own second chair and investigator. He chose his former wife, Maggie McFerson, (Maggie McFierce) as the prosecutor second chair, and Harry Bosch as the investigator. What follows is an action-packed book that I couldn’t turn off for one minute. As it happens I read it on a weekend when we couldn’t do much else in the house because our kitchen counter tops were being replaced, so I had a good excuse to just read! The case was well laid out and analyzed with Connelly’s usual care when Mickey Haller is involved. Harry Bosch consulted Rachel Wallin to get a profile on Jessup. She said that if he were indeed the murderer, he’d been in prison for 24 years and would be on a short fuse. Later in the trial, she called again to say that Jessup was “getting ready to blow”, and so he did, with a vengance. The book ended with some loose ends, which I didn’t mind. It will be one on my ten best mysteries of the year.
