I ended up skimming most of the book, just because it went into way more detail about zoos, living in them and working in them, than I'd ever want to know. But the beginning was very interesting, about the complexities of elephants living in the "wilds" of Africa (since there are not large swatches of wild Africa any longer, as that population has also so encroached on wildlife's space). It makes a better argument for elephants living in captivity than I have ever read before, with all their horrors of living through cullings of herds, the devastation they wreak on the environment, just the pragmatics of housing them in Africa. The author seems to have written a fine book.
