I think that Karen Vail is a character who would have made more sense to me if I had read the previous books in the series. Obviously, she is an FBI profiler who has a habit of somehow attracting the attention of the serial killers she is profiling, but not having read the earlier books I can only guess that from the way she handled herself in this novel. She's not one of the most compelling woman detectives I have read - that honor is reserved for Dana Stabenow's Kate Shugak, Carol O'Connell's Mallory, and maybe J.D. Robb's Eve Duncan, but the book was engaging and had all the typical plot twists. It's a quick read.

My one caveat for readers is that the story line will be continued in the next book. There were LOTS of loose ends. I really hate coming to the end of a book to find out that I have to wait until the next book in the series to find out how it all ends.
