This very short work by Roth was overall underwhelming for me. This is the tale of a semi-famous stage actor who looses his ability to act and subsequently his wife. He then enters into a sexual relationship with a much younger woman who ultimately leaves him at which point he commits suicide. This presents somewhat of a trite plot for me, which is not particularly dressed up with anything to make it more unusual. Roth is a latented writer and there are some well written passages, but overall not a very strong work. Certainly if one wants to read Roth, American Pastoral or The Plot Against America are much better choices and both worth reading.
