Although the second half of the book was more fun than the first, and I enjoyed the banter between Cal and Jane, I never really warmed to Jane. I found her tedious in the first half of the book, and she only barely managed likable in the second half. I almost gave up on her again near the end when her pigheadedness went on a few too many pages for me. The repetitive conversations between her and Cal got to be tiresome. Honestly, there really wasn't much meat to this story, and I felt SEP padded it with several scenes between Cal and Jane that were basically replays of earlier scenes. The secondary story about Cal's parents was very well-done and more compelling for me in some ways.
On the positive side, there was some very funny dialog in the book, including the scene in the hardware store, which was SEP at her best. I didn't like the secondary characters in the first part of the book, but loved Cal's family and enjoyed Kevin Tucker. I also, believe it or not, loved the last chapter or epilogue, or whatever it was. I thought it was well done, and it makes me wonder if that, along with the hardware store scene, isn't the reason so many people finish this book with such a positive feeling. ;-)
Anna Fields is an excellent narrator.

Oh no...... I loved it. It's been 3 1/2 years since I read it, so my memory may not be the best. But the best parts were when Jane and Cal were living together which might be later than where you are. Oh well, we can't agree on everything. SEP makes me laugh. I'm glad to see you try it.

I'm listening to it on audio, and the narrator is wonderful, so that helps. What doesn't help about audio is that I can't skim when I think the story is bogging down in repetitive introspection. I'm also having a problem with the premise to begin with. Finding a "suitable" father for the baby could have been arranged as a business transaction made through a lawyer and a fertility doctor. Like getting a surrogate. The early "seduction" scenes to me were long, not sexy, and painfully awkward. But there's a caveat: you have to keep in mind I'm a person who doesn't find embarrassing humor funny. I cringe at The Office or Napoleon Dynamite. I mute acceptance speeches when watching awards shows and I mute the judges remarks the rare times I've watched shows like American Idol or So You Think You Can Dance. I'm strange that way. ;-)
Regarding humor,I mostly agree with you regarding The Office, Napoleon, and the others. But SEP usually works for me. I gave 5 stars to Lady Be Good which I laughed at a lot. I noticed you gave it 4 stars. Do you remember the hot tub scene, early in the book? It's where she asked about escort services. I was hysterical with laughter.Anyway, hope this one gets better for you as you get farther along.
Yes! I did enjoy Lady Be Good! I also really enjoyed Heaven, Texas and This Heart of Mine (although the first part of that was somewhat uncomfortable, too). I even gave It Had to be You 4*. I almost stopped that one after the early convenience store "pick up." Blech. I think I keep coming back to SEP because of her skill as a writer, even when her story-telling makes me uncomfortable. I think she must like throwing the unexpected in there. ;-)
