Having read many Dirk Pitt adventures over the years, I knew the recipe for this book. Thankfully I enjoy the Dirk Pitt characters, which made this book bearable.

During the first story line of the book, I kept waiting for Scooby-Doo and the gang to arrive in the Mystery Machine, and for the chief evil doer to appear and say, "if it wasn't for those meddling kids..." Predictable, unimaginative, and unbelievable even if the setting was up to par with Cussler's usual maritime research.

Thankfully, the other story line, while still predictable in some places and fraught with one-dimensional villains, was exciting and dramatic. I have to admit the the final showdown between the good guys and bad guys had unexpected twists that had me alternately biting my nails and shouting in triumph.

Not my favorite Dirk Pitt adventure, but it did have me enthralled at the end.
