An Ideal Husband
by Oscar Wilde
by Oscar Wilde
Many might assume that this was a play written specifically about me. While it might seem like this is the case, this was actually written almost one hundred years before I was born. However, that doesn't mean that it still couldn't be associated with me ... nor does it mean that it is now no longer a) funny or b) relevant. Because it is, in fact, funny. Beyond that, it is eerily relevant ... probably more so than even Oscar would have imagined in his Wilde-st dreams (sorry ... had to).
Oscar Wilde's sense of humor feels as if it could have come straight out of today's society. Better yet, his satire feels as if it could have come straight out of today's social/political climate. Old, yes, but still surprisingly fresh. Plus, insightful. You can read it for entertainment, but if you want an idea of what a true "ideal" anything is ... well, come look here. While some of Wilde's ideas of gender roles are a bit antiquated, generally, there is plenty to learn here.
Now, some of you might feel that I am being a bit vain in associating myself with the title of this play, but, as Arthur from the play so aptly puts it (and here I will end): "To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance."
