I love Ian McEwan and think he's a brilliant writer, and this book really was beautifully written. The description of every tiny detail is masterfully done. I felt myself imagining that in certain parts of the book, my visual image must have been exactly like the author's when he wrote it because his description was so on, it could not possibly have conjured up another image. However, beautiful description or not, there was a bit too much of it. Maybe the blame lies in my short attention span (and thank goodness the novel is short), but I found that writing a novel about one awkward night was just too slow a read for me.
