it was amazing
bookshelves: fiction
Read from March 09 to November 24, 2010

I acquired this young-adult novel off the discard shelf at the public library. I planned to participate in the local Altered Book project, so was looking for a book that I could modify and dismantle. I chose it for the title, the dust cover art, its size, and the graphic design inside the book.

However, I found that I couldn't bring myself to deface the book and ended up reading it instead. The author, in her endnotes, says that although many of the facts are drawn from history, it is "a fantasy set in an ancient time." The protagonists are a young widow accused of witchcraft and a young man who is deaf and outcast. The story is about prejudice and ignorance, but also about the bonds of friendship and the deep need to communicate and connect with one another.
