Neither as gripping or as scholarly as it might have been (of course, trying to read a biography during labor was probably a poor reader's advisory choice on my part). I'm not a big footnote/endnote reader, but it took me until about halfway through the book to realize there were any citation notes--they were grouped by page number in the back. This makes me feel better about the scholarly work, but it's hard to follow if you do want to follow the notes, and also hard to tell which parts are based on research and which are speculation based on context...I do think this gets better as the book goes along.

The not-gripping part was mostly me trying to get into the story--especially at the end, it takes her forever to die!

Still, it's a solid biography given that there's not much to go on in terms of primary sources.
