It's difficult to rate this book. I'd probably give it a 2 1/2 stars (if I could). The setup is one that's been done over and over and over. So much so, that if the protagonist has ever seen a cop show or movie mystery, it would be unbelievable that he made some of these mistakes.

However, the characters and the discriptions of Londo itself are interesting, well rounded and have a unique voice. How the protagonist deals with most of his problems are also pretty interesting.

In the end however, there's a final killing that doesn't fit in well with our protagonists character and the book ends with a thud - not an unsatisfying resolution, but rather not much resolution at all.

I'm going to try some of his other books, because William Boyd's clearly got some kind of mojo. He just didn't quite see it all the way through in this book.
