After the Night

by Linda Howard
This is one of my favorite Linda Howard books. I dont know how many times I have read it.. This book takes the first 6 chapters to cover the family history between the Rouillard's and the Devlin's. Faith Devlin was born into a poor white trash family. Her mother is the town slut, her sister is on her way to following in her mothers foot steps -her two older brother are worthless, her father a mean alcoholic and then her mentally handicapped younger brother that she has taken care of since he was born.
Grey Rouillard is from the richest Louisiana families and has everything going his way from being on the college football team to getting all the girls. But his mother has major issues and will not allow her husband or her children to touch her.. She allows her husband to have his flings on the side as long as he leaves her alone. Renee Devlin (mother of Faith) has been having an affair with Guy Rouillard (Grey's father) for years. He allows her and her family to live in a shack on his land rent free.. When one morning its found out that Renee and Guy didnt come home everyone assumes the worst - that they ran away together and left their families. This causes Grey's sister to try and kill herself. This sends Grey over the edge and in the middle of the night with the sheriff's dept goes out to the Devlin shack and throws them all out not caring that Faith is just 14 and the younger mentally handicapped brother is just 7. This is a very hard scene to get through as you feel for poor Faith.
Then we go to 12 years later. Faith has come back to Prescott, LA to find out what happened to Guy. She knows she wont be welcomed back with open arms and she is right.. Grey now pretty much owns the town and most of the business in it. When he finds out she is in town staying in one of his hotels he kicks her out.. But the sexual attraction is still there for Faith and now Grey is sexually attracted to her to even though it pains him to be so as it would only hurt his mother and sister if he started an affair with Faith. Faith and Grey dance around each other - he tries to find out who she has become to find a weakness to use against her. Since Faith is not the weak little 14 year old girl he threw in the dirt 12 years before she has all of her bases covered..
From here Faith starts looking into what might have really happened to Grey's father. She starts getting letters telling her she had better stop and a nasty surprise in a box. Grey stops fighting his attraction to Faith and is there for her through the scares. When these two finally give in - whew - hot. The ending on who did it and who was sending those letters was a shocker and also very sad. But Faith and Grey conquered all to have there HEA..
