This was a really enjoyable book. I feel that because it is told completely from people's own personal interactions with Hunter S Thompson, you truly get a feel for the role he played in their lives as well as the appreciation they had for him. There is no mistaking the fact that he was completely insane. The book takes you from infancy to post suicide, and he has never been very normal. The drugs though, obviously deteriorated him through out the years and this is blatant in people's recounting.
But in spite of (or because of?) that imbalance, it is clear that he was genius and respected because of it. He was a unique individual who was pulled and pushed by forces in this world and within himself that many people can't handle. His drive, his passion, would have crushed a lesser man and the friends in his life telling his stories recognized this.

I found this book a very easy read and extremely interesting.
