Yeah, this is my least favorite of the trilogy. It tries too hard, I think. I still don't think that the books impart the message of killing God - they still strike me as more of a rebellion against a Catholic upbringing. Anyway, I think that a lot of the fun of the story and the worlds Pullman invents is lost in his attempts to imbue it with such religious symbolism and importance, and the ending is so heart-wrenching, which just doesn't seem right for a story about two kids, 13- or 14-year-olds. Anyway. I love the first book, almost love the second, and just like this third one. My favorite parts are with Mary and the mulefa.
