Entirely admirable, beautifully written and imagined. The world of the novel comes very much alive. One thing, though. The author makes a rather startling claim about the Catholic Church at the end of the novel (basically, that the Church readily gave up total power when it realized its time was past, and all the technology and wisdom it had been hoarding for so long) which seems utterly implausible, considering the world of the novel that has been so carefully maintained, and also considering the history of the world for the last couple of millennia, and very definitely implausible considering the events of the last twenty years or so.
