I am tempted to give this novel five stars. Very tempted. Though I had to read the English translation, I was most struck by how mature this crime novel is, by how well Nesbo has balanced character development, plot (which is intricate, yet never too tangled), and cultural commentary. I liked the first two harry Hole novels--Redbreast and Nemesis. But this one is even better. The writing is stronger. The characters are more nuanced. The plot is a first-rate pageturner. A *very* fine read, especially for jaded fans of crime fiction.
