Okay, so I normally don't start a series midway through, but I made an exception this time. A children's story written by Clive Barker? with illustrations no less (although I'm told not all editions of this book contain the illustrations so be forewarned). There is an amazing cacophony of sound, sights, smells, and creatures with an adventurous heroine, and a magical world to explore. Despite starting with the second book, it seems like there was enough explanation of backstory to get me up to speed on prior important events and characters. Would recommend this even if you can't find the first book. Some of the imagery and turns of phrase make me smile weeks after finishing the book.
