I was surprised at the depth of Digger, the main character, and as got further & further into the story, I felt that I was peeling away layers & layers to the storyline. The thrill-ride of this story starts right off on page 1. Each of the characters-big or small-harbors at least 1 secret that slowly reveals itself as the story progresses and many of them are not what they originally appear to be. I'm not a huge "fantasy" fan, but this novel really hooked me. One reason is that it makes for a great illustration of character development & moral dilemmas. It wrapped up some issues neatly at the end, while leaving the door open for Bunce's next one in which to continue the "unresolved" things from this book.
