Midnight (The Vampire Diaries: The Return, #3)

Oh, by the way, this is a LONG review. And i gave it four stars because everything is riding on this book for me, and if it doesn't fit the bill I so desperately hope it does, bad things will happen in my mind.
Hmm. I absolutely adore these two series, and I say "two series'" because, well, it in truth has to be two series'. In the first four books, Elena meets Stefan and Damon, falls for Stefan, becomes a vampire, dies whilest being a vampire, and is a---ghost?---in the fourth book. Then she's brought back to life somehow, still not quite sure how, at the end of the fourth book.
Okay. Happy ending right there.
Then three more books come out, clearly stating in their titles "THE RETURN".
Why am I saying this? Because, let's face it, everything is different for Elena now, and Stefan practically becomes a non-entity while Damon steals the show. And, you know what, I'm happy in a way, because Stefan never really did it for me in the first four books, and I will put the Vampire DIaries in my "Never Read Again Nor Recommend To Anyone Because the Ending was Plain Torture" book series list, along with the Hunger Games series and maybe the Immortals series, if Elena does not end up with Damon.
In the first four books, fine, Damon wasn't just the bad boy, he wasn't even a consideration for Elena because of his "You're mine" attitude towards her. That, I feel, was the only thing to hang on to in the first four books, as the relationship between Stefan and Elena was never fully developed and has rather been annoying for the entire series, both of them in fact. In the Vampire Diaries published in the 1990s, Elena needed to love and be loved by someone who could show her the gentleness and beauty in the world. Now, in the 2000s, Elena needs to show this to Damon, and, in a way, has already. But when she gets Stefan back at the end of the sixth book, Stefan and Elena's emotional connection are, I feel, not only lacking, but... inadequate. You, even if you like the "Stelena" duo, don't feel the fire in their relationship anymore, as the "Delena" relationship now has that flare.
So my point is: DAMON AND ELENA are the ones who belong together now, not Stefan and Elena or Damon and Bonnie. (Bonnie's character, I don't know, has never really interested me. She reminds me of a faithful little chihuahua, not a potential love interest).
This is what I hope will happen: yeah, Damon and Elena make the couple that should be made (and yeah, umm, don't they kiss in the sixth book? A lot? Show deep feelings for each other that make you so freaking giddy you have to stop reading and squeal, even if three lines down the page they get into an argument?) Ummm, Alaric and Meredith... eh... I honestly don't care what happens to them. Their relationship is kind of... uninteresting. Bonnie and Matt, sure, okay, have them end up together. Not for any deep, emotional, I-love-you-so-much-and-I-can-never-be-without-you way, but just because they both need a shoulder to cry on, I think. Oh, Damon should become a vampire again, Elena maybe going to become a vampire, (like, hint at it and not actually write it in), and Stefan I feel nuetral towards. He wants to be human, well, okey-dokey then. He wants to stay a vampire to always and forever protect ELena, even though she isn't in love with him anymore? Super. I know Stefan is supposed to be a major character, but I lack all feeling towards him, and have lacked said feeling since the beginning of the Elena/Stefan/Damon story.
This being said, if Elena ends up with Stefan, or Bonnie with Damon (blech), I will stare at the walls and mope for hours, maybe even days, because that feeling that you've lost someone dear to you? I'd feel that in abundance.
And oh, I read the book synopsis on amazon, and I have to say that I think it hints that Bonnie and Damon are going to end up together. Ver, very sad.

Ah, but do you not hate it when a major character falls in love with a minor character, and you didn't even see them bond in the first place?
Morgan wrote: "Ah, but do you not hate it when a major character falls in love with a minor character, and you didn't even see them bond in the first place?"I don't hate it, there is that and the fact that I like them together since the first series. on The 4th book, they did get to know each other, which is another reason I am not really into The return series, is as if Damon now just lives for Elena, which is kind of sad. Even if it's love he should not be as obsess.
Ooh, but you know what? In the third book (whatever its title was--how sad is that, I can't even remember its title) Elena becomes a vampire right away. And she's instinctual, stopping the fight between Damon and Stefan... and you know who she calls her soulmate? Damon!! If she didn't like him much in the first two books, and I think it's safe to say that Elena has powers others don't... then she belongs with Damon. Not with Stefan, and Damon not with Bonnie. I don't mean to offend you, Astoria, by arguing with what you want to happen in this book. And I'm sorry if I do. I just really, really want this book to end the way I think it has to end, because If it doesn't, a lot of my respect for L.J. Smith will have gone down the drain. I quite enjoy some of her books, but a few others, ones I was extremely exited about, ended up being extremely disappointing. I don't want the Vampire Diaries to be dead to me, but it will be if I hate the ending.

Smith said she did not recall having the soulmate principle in mind while writting the first 4 books, and as far as I am concerned, Stefan makes Elena be a better person, a braver person. Damon just makes her lust. My best friend put it this way "Elena pretty much became a Bella Swan in the making on book 5"
and Book 3 is called "The Fury".
I just don't like the new Damon, he is not the same Damon who said "get away from my brother" or "Go to hell", he is more of a whimpy kid now.
Does it matter if Smith had the soulmate principal in mind when she wrote the books? It's done, it's written. Nothing can change that now. So if Smith makes a total contradiction by having Elena and Stefan end up together, then she just ruined her whole series.

By friend loves him, but she agrees that he has change, and Elena feels like a Mary sue in the making.
Omg!!! I will be mad if Damon and Bonnie get together.Bonnie is an annoying brat that needs to back off from Damon because he deserves so much better. If they get together i will be pissed. :(
Damon and Elena are a totally better couple than Stefan and Elena. For all i care Stefan could have Bonnie.
I agree with you about the show. In the books Tyler and Caroline--kind of-- get together anyways, but then movies and shows are nothing like the books. So, this being said, the couple of Caroline and Tyler in the show is definitely cuter than Matt and Caroline, who don't even get together in the books. It's kind of like what I said about Damon, Elena and Stefan. Stefan is Elena's past, Damon is her future. Matt is Caroline's past, Tyler is her future. : )

I just hope L.J Smith makes them together in the book because I would be heartbroken and disappointed to see Elena and Stefan together
i honestly think of bonnie and damon end up together i will have a mini heart attack LOL, seriously, you summed up my feelings in a paragraph thank you :)

Damon d... I'll message you, I don't want to ruin it for others.
Giovanna wrote: "Okay thank you."You should just wait until you can get the book. Don't rely on a spoiler. They... spoil. Dream about possible endings to the book or something, and read it when you get the chance. Going into the book knowing what's going to happen... sucks.

L.J. Smith will not be writting the next series herself. She was fired apparently she did not own the rights to the vampire Diaries, she was hired to write the books, so there were some differences and she was fired, a ghost writer will continue the series.
It's sad, but I kinda feel relieve because at least now, she will ahve time to finally finish Strange Fate.
And I'll message you
That's awful! I hate how money controls Everything. I love L.J.'s style of writing. It's her series, that's just plain wrong.

I think this is stupid, you just can't have another writer fill in for an author who has been writing a series for so long. This new author will not be able to feel and love the characters the same way L.J smith did. This series of books can only be finished by one author and that is L.J Smith.
Giovanna wrote: "I think this is stupid, you just can't have another writer fill in for an author who has been writing a series for so long. This new author will not be able to feel and love the characters the same..."My thoughts exactly.

I really do wanted her to finish Strange Fate, and if she goes back to her old style it would be better,

Damon obviously cares for Bonnie, but every time Elena is around, he merely obsesses about her.
