Starts really well and shares plot links with my own book, "Some Rivers End on the Day of the Dead." I think McNeal is at the top of the YA Writers' List.

"Dark Water" is an immensely moving book. The heroine, Pearl DeWitt, reminded me of the obsessive guy in "Endless Love." She goes forward when she knows she should go back.

The setting of Fallbrook, California, the picturesque yet dangerous chaparral hills and valleys, form a strategic part of the plot.

Pearl's wayward father, ground-down mother, and good friends Greenie and Robby are no match for Pearl's infatuation with the farm hand, Amiel. Amiel is the strong, silent type. . .for a reason.

This was a terrific book with a huge climax and a resounding denouement.
