You would think that a novel whose protagonist is an omniscient fat lady would really appeal to me. But sadly, this novel about a girl so large that she is a curiosity, just didn't do it for me. For one thing, and I am willing to give an author a lot of room on this, she seems to know what her mother was thinking as she died giving birth to her. In fact, she knows a lot of stuff about what people are thinking. Such a gift should make you wise, or uncanny or at least wealthy. Truly Plaice is none of these. In fact, she is not even likeable. She does inexplicable stuff. Other characters act out of character. The book squanders its promise. And that's all I've got to say about that.
