Unseen Academicals (Discworld, #37)
by Terry Pratchett
by Terry Pratchett
It is difficult for me to do a review on anything by Prachett because I love his sense of humour. His books relax and amuse me so very much.
Unseen Academicals is not any different in this respect. The story takes place around the wizard-professors of Unseen University and their general insanity. To describe the general insanity would be to give away the book, so I won't do that.
Prachett, as usual, creates fun, entertaining characters. Many of the characters are old men, which, as old men go, are quite "traditional" and amusing.
My favourite quote from the book is near the beginning, and said by one of the professors when arguing that no one retires from U.U.: "He left to get married! That is the same as dying!"
There are younger members of the cast, but they are all maids and servants of the university. They each have their own entertaining personality that draws you into the world of this university.
The basics of the story line revolve around the problems with traditions when the world and times change. There is a tradition that the wizards ought to play in a very violent game of what sounds like street fights mixed with rugby and soccer. If they don't get over the fact that they are gentlemen and play, then they can't remain in control.
In his usual way, Prachett takes a somewhat normal idea for a plot, and combines it with entertaining characters to make a fun story worth reading again.
