This is my first Rose Tremain book and I really enjoyed her writing. The book centres around two sets of siblings, Aramon and Audren Lunel and Veronica (V) and Anthony Verey, both from two very different backgrounds and both badly affected by their pasts.

Aramon and Audrun Lunel have lived in Mas Lunel a stone farmhouse that has been in their family for 400 hundred years in the Cevennes. Aramon in the farmhouse he inherited and Audren in her modern bungalow, built for her on the parcel of land she inherited.
Veronica and her lover Kitty have moved to France and live happily designing gardens, writing gardening books and painting and Anthony is a wealthy ageing former 'somebody' in the Antiques business in England.

Anthony decides to move to France, buy an isolated property and reinvent himself. After viewing Mas Lunel which Aramon has decided to sell, his heart is set on it but with one proviso and that's when the trouble really starts.
